Deal with Death .
Deal With Death was first published in 2008, but I chose it as the first review for my site because this book has been on my mind for years. It was written by Endy, an Urban Authoress from Newark, N.J. whom I personally believe to be among the best Urban Fiction writers. She delves into the heart and soul of the genre without fear. And on the pages she creates she blends the hardness of the streets with the struggles and bonds of family. I first read her work while serving disciplinary time in F.C.I.-Gilmer, WV and this book has been stuck in my mind ever since.
My Synopsis
This book entails the life of Nina Boyd, a drug-addicted mother (hooked on heroine) and mother of two teenage boys. She is a functioning drug addict who deeply cares for her sons. Their father is in prison. However, her addiction is way out of control and although she is in heavy denial her two sons Malik and Marquis are nevertheless fully aware of her inconspicuous activities. Her eldest son Malik — a nineteen-year-old high school dropout who decides to take on the brunt of being the man of the household — decides to pull his family out of poverty by making money the fast way. During his street-life come-up he makes a deal with a well-known drug dealer named Todd “Death” McClain.
Death, a Street-Vet happens to see a lot of money-making potential in Malik as his business grows exponentially from the basement through the roof. A conflict arises due to Malik having other ideas that don’t involve Death in his money-making empire. Contrarily, Malik fails to realize that once you make a deal with Death, the only way out is in a body bag and all hell breaks loose.
During Malik’s come-up, Marquis the younger of the two who is determined to live life as straight as an arrow has just graduated from high school and pursues college. However, during his pursuit he is reluctantly pulled into his older brother’s street dealings which soon interfere with his own life in ways that will forever change him. Marquis is also determined to make sure his mother Nina gets clean once and for all.
My Review
Deal with Death is a tenacious page-turner. It’s full of the violent escapades encircling the higher echelon of the drug underworld. Being more than your average pharmaceutical street-dealer comes with a heavy price, and it is shown by Endy through vivid writing that takes you into the action to reveal the drug game’s impact on the life of a mother and her sons.
Even though this story may seem to be a run-of-the-mill hood novel, I must say it certainly is not. As one turns the pages they will make an instant connection with the characters throughout. I was profoundly touched by Nina’s relationship with her two sons, and how the youngest Malik reacted when he uncovered his mother’s darkest secrets concerning the incarceration of his absentee father. The pain he felt was touching to the soul. What really gets to you the most will be within the last pages of this book. It is so shocking that it will forever imprint your mind.
Truly this story easily gets a five star rating from me as it mainly focuses on the detrimental effects of drugs upon family, and community alike. However, this book also contains many pages full stunning action scenes, and lots of devilish, low-life, betrayals that will make you want to rush to the last page. Deal with Death definitively is a timeless piece that will leave its mark in the history of urban literature.I am sure that you will be delighted to the end…dioncheese.com
